Colorectal Cancer Screening

The Mt. Sterling Clinic offers screening for colorectal cancer. Colon cancer is a common disease causing thousands of deaths. Although it is uncommon before the age of 40, the incidence rises with aging to 3.7/1000 by age 80 with a lifetime incidence of 5%. Most of these cases (90%) occur after age 50.

The removal of polyps can prevent colorectal cancer and the removal of early colorectal cancers can prevent cancer-related death.

Colonoscopy is a safe and effective way to reduce death from colon cancer. Our office provides colonoscopy studies at Saint Joseph Mt. Sterling. Drs. King and Roberts have a combined endoscopy experience of more than 40 years. With colonoscopy we can remove polyps and early cancers and biopsy larger tumors.

In average risk patients we recommend colonoscopy beginning at age 50. If these exams are normal we recommend an exam every 10 years to age 80. If you have a family history of colon cancer you may need colonoscopy screening more frequently and beginning at an earlier age.

Please discuss colon cancer screening with your provider.
